Oracle EBS Financial versus Cloud ERP Financials – part 1

Oracle EBS Financial versus Cloud ERP Financials – part 1

What is the difference between Oracle EBS Financials and Cloud ERP Financials ?

Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle Fusion Applications are two different Enterprise Resource Solutions (ERP) developed by Oracle Corporation.

Oracle E-Business Suite (previously known as Oracle Apps)

Oracle EBS or E-Business Suite a.k.a Oracle Apps is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Application.  It is a bundle of enterprise solutions that comprises different modules.  It includes Oracle Financials, Oracle SCM, Oracle HRMS, Oracle Projects, Oracle CRM, Oracle Procurement etc.

It developed long time back using Oracle tools like Forms, Reports etc. and was desktop client-server based. Over a period of time EBS has evolved and has started to embrace newer technologies to work on thin clients like browser. It moved from Forms to PL/SQL Web Toolkit, then OAF and now uses Oracle Fusion technologies and now called as Fusion applications.

Oracle Cloud ERP Financials

Oracle Corporation developed a next-generation enterprise solutions product called Oracle Cloud ERP Financials  (also called Oracle Fusion Applications)

Oracle Cloud ERP Financials  (also called Oracle Fusion Applications) is the convergence of E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edward, Siebel etc) is built on top of Oracle Fusion Middleware.  It is a combination of features and functionalities taken from Oracle E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, and Siebel product lines.  It provides services in financial management, HCM, CRM, supply chain management, procurement, government and project portfolio management.

Oracle Fusion referred in two distinct branding contexts:

  • Oracle Fusion Applications – OFA
  • Oracle Fusion Middleware – OFM

Oracle Fusion Applications – OFA

A suite of enterprise resource planning software applications across various domains – Financial management, HCM, CRM, SCM etc.  It is built on top of OFM technology stack. It is based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).

Oracle Fusion Middleware – OFM

It provides entire suite of middleware used to run modern, standards-based applications. It provides Java EE services, developer tools, integration services, business intelligence, security, content management. OFM depends on open standards – BPEL, SOAP, XML and JMS.

Oracle Corporation constantly striving to improve its technology and to make sure its Oracle Cloud Fusion Applications Software can be access by users anywhere in the world, through the Internet.

Architecture Fusion Middleware of Oracle Fusion Application

Each product in Oracle Fusion Middleware (like SOA, OBIEE, Webcenter etc) has its own Architecture.  However from the end users perspective, we should look at Oracle Fusion Middleware as a 3 Tier Architecture:
• Web Tier (DMZ)
• Application Tier
• Data Tier

Oracle Fusion Middleware component like OHS or OTD are deployed in DMZ (Web Tier), whereas products like SOA, OBIEE, etc with WebLogic are deployed in Application Tier .
Data Tier contains Directory Services like Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) or Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Database.
Application Tier to Data Tier communication is either on Java Database Connectivity(JDBC) or Oracle Net Services (TNS).

Oracle Fusion Applications
is the number One Cloud ERP Application.
